The Tonkawa Bucs have a tall order this Saturday afternoon.
In fact, Head Coach Mike Kirtley says Cashion is “ridiculously good.”
And that’s what’s on the agenda for the Bucs as they travel to top-ranked Cashion for a game that could decide the District A-3 championship.
It has been picked the sixth best game in all of Oklahoma high school football to watch by The Daily Oklahoman in its top ten prep games of the week.
Kick off is at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cashion.
The Bucs are 6-1 and 4-0 in the league while the Wildcats are 7-0 and 2-0.
Skordle has Cashion ranked one and Tonkawa tenth. The Oklahoman has Cashion ranked second, Tonkawa eighth and Crescent tenth. The Wildcats close out the regular season vs. Crescent while the Bucs host OBA in their season finale Nov. 6. First round playoff games begin Nov. 13.
In its synopsis of the game, the Oklahoman said “Cashion hasn’t been tested since nondistrict play but has a possible district title on the line this week with Tonkawa, which won the state title in 2018 and seems to have regained some championship form.”
Cashion has non-district wins over Rejoice Christian 47-14, Perry 49-13, Minco 47-0, Thomas 28-7 and Stillwater JV 40-27. Their league wins have come over Watonga 54-12 and OBA 53-7.
Kirtley said the Wildcats have no weaknesses. “They are big, fast, strong and precise. I have found no weak links. They’re just ridiculously good. They throw and run from a spread offense and are in a 3-4 defense.”
Tonkawa is coming off a 27-0 Homecoming win over Hinton. “It’s good to have Homecoming out of the way,” Kirtley said.
The one good thing that came out of the win against Hinton is it guarantees the Bucs of no lower than a fourth place finish in District A-3 and gives Tonkawa a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The OSSAA has changed the format to a six week championship bracket. All teams will play the first week -- Nov. 13 -- with the higher seed hosting. Then the winners will enter the regular five-game championship bracket. First and second place finishers in each district are guaranteed two home games in the playoffs as long as they advance. District A-3 teams will be matched up with teams from District A-4.
