We often wonder why there are so many different church denominations. The answer lies in a study of church history, but unfortunately many of the divisions have come about because of human opinion and preferences, and all to frequently these are based on very manor things. Now we know that Jesus prayed that his people be unified. Paul in Ephesians 4 tells us that there are seven “ones” that lead to unity. He says that we must be “diligent” to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Then he lists these seven ones, or seven pillars that unity is founded upon: one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and the one God and Father. We must stand for truth and we must never settle for a unity that does not follow these even critical pillars of truth. There can never be unity based on individual ideas or preferences, but only on God’s truth.King David declared in Psalm 133:1: How delightfully good when brothers live together in harmony! God is pleased and delighted when His people live together in harmony and unity. This was on Jesus’ heart the night before his crucifixion as he prayed: “I pray not only for these, but also for those who believe in me through their word. May they all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us, so that the world may believe you sent me” (John 17_20-21).But oneness and unity don’t come naturally and they require effort. Paul began Ephesians 4 with the explanation that we must live lives worthy of our calling and this was to make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Paul explained that effort to keep unity requires the right attitudes. He says that we must have humility, the right attitude towards ourselves. Humility doesn’t mean thinking lowly of ourselves, rather it means thinking rightly and accurately of ourselves. This includes knowing that we are loved and valued by God and that we are sinners saved by grace. Then secondly, we need the right attitude towards others – gentleness, patience and forbearance – these are the ways that God treats us and the ways we want others to treat us, so that’s the way we should treat others. This fills out the attitude of humility.Third,
