Veteran’s Day, November 11th, is the day set aside to honor the men and women who honorably served our country. THANK
YOU, VETERANS!!!
You should be celebrated daily.
Veteran’s Day, originally known as Armistice Day, was started on November 11, 1918, following the end of World War I. It was in June, 1954 that Congress amended the 1938 legislation by striking out ‘Armistice’ and replacing it with ‘Veterans.’
Memorial Day, observed in May, honors service members who died during wartime as well as veterans who have died since.
The American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary serve the veterans by lobbying for benefits, providing help for military families, sponsoring scholarships, promoting patriotism and leadership through the Boys State and Girls State programs. Many more benefits are available. Discharged men and women need to contact Jesse Chaney at 628-3624 to join the American Legion.
Mothers, wives, sisters and daughters of veterans may contact Evelyn Coyle at 628-2712 for membership in the Legion Auxiliary.
These are such worthwhile organizations.
