While looking through the 1980 cookbook, Tonkawa’s Best Cooks and Favorite Recipes, I came across a recipe for Hamburger Pie with some interesting ingredients I thought would be fun to try. Especially liked using cheese in the pie crust. This crust would be excellent for an apple pie.You could say, this hamburger pie is like a hamburger all rolled into a one dish meal. Served it with fresh sliced tomatoes and a simple lettuce salad.Hamburger PieMarilyn JamesFilling:1 pound Lean Ground Beef1 package Dry Onion Soup Mix1/2 teaspoon Salt1/4 teaspoon Pepper, optional1/3 cup Pickle Relish1/3 cup Chili Sauce1/4 cup or more grated Cheddar CheeseIn a large skillet, cook and brown ground beef; drain off grease. Stir in the dry soup mix, salt, pepper, pickle relish and chili sauce. Stir and simmer for a few minutes. Pour meat mixture into prePour meat mixture into prepared uncooked crust that has been placed in a 9 or 10-inch pie plate. Sprinkle with grated cheese. Top with the top crust and vent with a few knife slits. Bake at 400 degrees for about 30 minutes or until browned.Crust:1/2 cup Evaporated Milk or Light Cream such as Half and Half2 teaspoons Vinegar2 cups Flour1 teaspoon Salt1/2 cup grated Cheddar Cheese2/3 cup Vegetable ShorteningIn a small bowl, combine cream (I used half and half) with the vinegar, stir to combine; set aside.In a large bowl, sift flour with salt; stir in cheese. Cut in shortening to a coarse meal. Pour in cream mixture, stirring to combine. Form into a ball and divide in half.Roll out bottom and top crusts on a lightly floured surface.
