Edward Eugene “Ed” Akers
The Case of the Missing Oklahoma Buffalo Painting will be the theme for a mystery tour event conducted at the Marland Grand Home on October 4th. Guests will collect clues from seventeen Marland era characters and tally their results to solve the crime. The fundraising event will provide needed funding for on-going mansion restoration.
Edward Eugene “Ed” Akers of Tonkawa, Oklahoma, died

17, 2019, at his home at the age of 93 years.
Edward Eugene “Ed” Akers was born on April 15, 1926, in
Arkansas City, Kansas, to Otha
Willis and Caroline (Mills) Akers. He grew up and attending
Arkansas City Schools and Independence Rural School. Following his education he began working as a farm hand. He entered the United States Army on
October 19, 1945, and served in the Cavalry during World
War II. He was honorably discharged on October 11, 1948, from Camp Kilmer, New Jersey. Following his discharge, he moved to Newkirk, Oklahoma, and worked at the drug store and skating rink. He married Edith
Louise Pennington on October
20, 1951, in Newkirk and they settled in Blackwell where he began working for the Blackwell Zinc Company. In 1956 he began working for Arkla Gas Company where he retired in 1975 as a manager. Later that years they purchased the Holiday House and Sagamar Motel in Altus, Oklahoma, and owned and operated the businesses for seven years. They retired for five years before taking the motels back and operating them for another seven years. They then returned to Tonkawa where they began managing various campsites for the Corp of Engineers. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and held lifetime memberships in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed playing golf, bowling and traveling.
He is survived by his wife, Louise Akers of Tonkawa; a daughter, Ronda Harris of Tonkawa; a brother, Richard Akers of Arkansas City, Kansas; two grandsons, Brandt Harris and Brenda Kimble of Tonkawa, and David Harris of Henderson, Nevada; and a great grandson, Dalton Harris of Tonkawa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Debra Akers; and nine brothers and sisters.
Graveside services were scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 24th in the Blackwell Cemetery with Rev. Ned Moerbe of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in his honor with Hospice of North Central Oklahoma in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
