Sometimes we get frustrated and feel like we are not appreciated or valued. So our reaction is to ask, “Do you know who I am?” It is a way of thinking and living that says “I am the center of the universe and everything should go the way I want it to go, and the way the benefits me the most.”That voice inside us wants others to know that I’m important and special. But the real problem centers on our view and value of others. We are really saying that others are not as important as I am, perhaps, even suggesting that they are beneath me.Now most of us would never say something like that out loud. but we might live in a way that reflects that attitude. Now God comes to us as sinners—those who think that theNow God comes to us as sinners—those who think that the world revolves around “me.” But God wants us to know that He is the center of our world. Listen to what Paul wrote to the church at Ephesus (Eph. 1:20-22): “He [God] exercised this power in Christ by raising him [Christ] from the dead and seating him at his right hand in the heavens— far above every ruler and authority, power and dominion, and every title given, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he subjected everything under his feet and appointed him as head over everything for the church.”So when God wants us to think about what’s at the center of our universe, He doesn’t want us to consider ourselves. Yes, we are loved by God beyond measure. But we are not central to what matters the most in this life.We should think about ourselves a the moon. The moon plays an important role, but it is not the center. It role is to reflect the light of the sun. So we are to be reflectors of the true light of God.The philosophy of this world tells us to “Look out for number one,” and to: “Find our place in the world.” We are to “Make a name for ourselves.” But this approach to life is not what God wants; this approach leads to a dead end.We may think about an orchestra. What if each instrumentalist thought that the performance was “all about me?” Imagine each talented musician clamoring for self-expression and the spotlight.
