Recently we lost electricity during the night. It reminded us how dependent we are on that power. Now, in Acts 1:8, this is the last thing Jesus said before He ascended into heaven: “You will receive POWER when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.'Why was the POWER of Holy Spirit given to Jesus apostles? What was the Holy Spirit supposed to accomplish according to this verse? It says – the Holy Spirit was given so that they could have power to be HIS WITNESSES!In the book of Acts we see where God’s Spirit was involved in empowering and guiding and prompting Christians to do what they did. The apostles were given power to enable them to tell the story of Jesus and God’s salvation. They then witnessed to the crowd on the Day of Pentecost. They spoke boldly and with power.In Acts 4 Peter and John had been arrested for teaching about Christ and were taken before the Jewish high council. They were released but told not to teach about Jesus. They went to some of their fellow believers. They gathered together in prayer and “the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness” (Acts 4:31). The power of the Spirit enabled them to speak even more boldly!In Acts 8 the Holy Spirit instructed Philip to go to a stranger who was an Ethiopian to witness to him. In Acts 13 the church in Antioch was worshiping and fasting as they were seeking guidance. The Spirit told them to set apart Barnabas and Paul to send on a missionary journey. They were to go and tell the gospel to places that were further away. They were to witness.Later Paul and Silas wanted to go to Phrygia and Galatia and Bithynia, but the Spirit sent a vision to Paul to go to Macedonia. The Holy Spirit guided them to a different destination so that they could witness there.We see that God’s Spirit enabled these early Christians with the power to witness—to tell the gospel.
