Charge False, Olmstead Says
In a statement released today, Harris Olmstead, chairman of the state board of affairs, emphatically denied that he received a
$54,000 kickback from a Shawnee contractor for installation of electrical equipment at the state pentitentary.
“The charges referring to any action of dishonesty on my part as chairman of the board of affairs are entirely false,” Olmstead said
Wednesday. “They amount to a bald-face, unmitigated lie. The date and circumstance of presentation of the falsehood make clear the motive involved - to obtain publicly in an effort to breathe life into a defunct political campaign.
“I am surprised and shocked that a former Supreme Court judge, even under the extremity of his candidacy that is obviously withering on the vine, would associate his name with such a reckless assault upon the truth and upon the reputation of honest people.
“I am proud of the record of the board of affairs during my tenure.” Olmstead concluded, “and I shall welcome any legitimate inquiry into any and every transaction of our office.”
